Taking God at His Word

For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.

The Cure for American Idolatry

Posted in , , ,

A few weeks ago I posted what I believe are the most prevalent forms of idolatry in our time. As I thought about this list, I realized that Jesus addresses all three of these in one sermon. I will post the list again, but this time, with the remedies for each one.

1. Worshiping our own desires.

Idolatry:

"Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things." (Philippians 3:19)

"Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food." (1 Corinthians 6:13)

Cure: Fasting

"But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (Matthew 6:17-18)

2. Worshiping possessions - our own or another's.

Idolatry:

"For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God." (Ephesians 5:5)

"Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry." (Colossians 3:5)

Cure: Alms

"But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (Matthew 6:3-4)

3. Worshiping the means and tools of our success.

Idolatry:

"Therefore he sacrifices to his net and makes offerings to his dragnet; for by them he lives in luxury, and his food is rich." (Habakkuk 1:16)

Cure: Prayer

"Your Father know what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name...give us this day our daily bread.'" (Matthew 6:8-9, 11)
